How Do You Get Involved
Once you agree to participate in this year’s Farmer Time program, which connects classrooms with producers all over Australia, you’ll need the following information:
You should have received an email outlining the name, location and details of your classroom/producer match.
We encourage you to make contact at least 2–3 days before your video conference. PIEFA cannot provide technical support for your video conferencing method — please test this out beforehand with your producer/teacher.
Below is a list of tips to help make your session a success and please, at any stage, feel free to make contact with the PIEFA office to discuss.
Teacher Information
o The method for connecting with your producer will be given to you in the email outlining who you will be connecting with. This could be a variety of methods such as FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, Facebook video etc.
o Do some research about the industry, location that your producer is based; www.primezone.edu.au has videos with worksheets that give a quick and simple overview and, www.careerharvest.com.au can provide career overviews and pathways.
o Prepare some questions prior to the link up. Many will be generated once they connect, but just in case there is stage fright.
o Coordinate questions from your end as the producer is unlikely to easily see the class.
o Do test your video conferencing method prior to time and date.
A laptop at the front of the room with the screen projected onto screen works best.
o Keep on track and aim for a call lasting no more than 30 minutes.
o Please encourage students to write a brief reflective piece about the experience and share them with PIEFA.
o Please send PIEFA two or three sentences about your experience.
o Don’t stress, have fun and enjoy the experience!
o TAKE SOME PHOTOS PLEASE! We love to show them in our newsletter and social media.
Producers & Farmers
o Keep your discussion simple, you know what you do best and are the expert; talk about what you know. Don’t feel you have to ‘dumb it down’ for schools, the teacher will ask clarifying questions if required. Treat it as a day in the life and show what is around you. What it is. How it works. What it does.
o Listen actively. The questions you receive from the class is the best guide for the level of information to provide.
o Test your video conference method in the location you will be prior to the day. Most video conference apps are available for smartphones.
o Keep on track and aim for a call lasting no more than 30 minutes.
o Don’t stress, have fun and enjoy the experience!
